Prayer (Luke 11:1-10)

Pastor Gene JordanPastor Gene Jordan, April 17, 2011
Part of the Prayer series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

We all come to a time when we need something from God. Prayer is the tool to getting things done in the kingdom of God. 1 Thess 5:16-18 – Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. We will be looking at the steps of prayer when believing God for ourselves.

Praying to God is a vital part of our Christian walk. Praying keeps us in communion with God, a prayer is how we received Jesus and God even shows us how we are to pray according to His Word.

The Three Steps to Prayer

Today we will be reading from Luke 11:9-10 – “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

In Luke 11:1-10 Jesus gives us a basic outline of how we are to pray to God.

Today we have studied the 3 steps to prayer.
1) Ask God for what you need or want
2) Seek for the answer that he already has for you.
3) Knock on the door of his heart by praising him

Luke 11:1-10

11:1 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.

Give us each day our daily bread,
and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
