Storms, Instruction, Faith, Peace and Sleep

I find myself unable to sleep this evening (4:25 in the morning), and have been praying in tongues under my breath most of the night.

There has been this sense of urgency in my heart for several months now, and it is as I can see a storm off in the distance. The storm is coming closer and as it draws closer it seems to be moving faster and faster.

Like most storms in the natural, when you see them coming you start to prepare and possibly you even pray. You pray for several things like for protection, peace, direction or even how to prepare.

In church last Sunday, Pastor Randy saw a spiritual avalanche and told us to get ready. The avalanche was coming and it was going to wipe out the unnecessary things.

I found this interesting, because it was the same thing that the spiritual storm has been to me. I know in my heart what The Lord told me to do to prepare, but I wonder if I have done enough.

Like the avalanche that was going to wipe out the unnecessary things, The Lord told me to prepare for the spiritual storm by getting rid of the unnecessary things that weigh me down. That has been what I have been striving to do. Simplify my life and scale back, and wait for the storm to get here.

Matthew 4:35-40 tells of the story of Jesus calming the storm and it goes like this:
“And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship.
And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow:and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still.
And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?”

The key point to this scripture is that Jesus told them to go to the other side, and that was what they were doing. They were told by God to do something, and when the storm came they lost faith. They presumed that a storm was bigger than the God who created the wind and water.

Jesus had no worries, because He knew that the will of God was greater than anything that might come up to hinder it. I want to be like Jesus…

I know that a storm is coming, but I know what God told me to do to prepare for it. I know where He wants me to be during the storm, and I now that He will not allow the storm to hinder me. I want to safely sleep with Him in the bottom of the ship.

To build my faith, I got up out of bed and looked up a couple scripture verses on sleep…

I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken
Proverbs 3:24-26

It doesn’t matter what may try to arise up and keep me from God’s will for my life. When He tells me to cross over to the other side, that is exactly what I will do. When the wind and waves try to kill me, I know that I am safely sleeping in the arms of Christ.

Jesus is my Lord and my master, and nothing is big enough to take that away from me. There is no circumstance that is greater than Him, and there is nothing that can make me want serve another.

No man can serve two masters:for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on.
Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Behold the fowls of the air:for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them.
Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Take therefore no thought for the morrow:for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Matthew 6:24-34

I will not worry nor will I fret, my Master has me where He wants me. I repent from and renounce anything that would try to make me focus on another’s will.

I will seek first the kingdom of God, and do what He has told me to do. I will not sweat the small stuff that is not for me to worry about, because He will supply all my needs.

I can scale back and simplify my life and know that I will not lack for anything, because when I have weathered the storms and have crossed over to the other side, there will be the reward that He has promised me.
