Thank God For History Lessons

Molly was telling us the other day, that a girl in her class asked why they had to study history. Mary and I weren’t surprised that the question was asked, nor were we surprised that a child with a 12 year life history of her own didn’t know the answer. We told Molly what we were told as kids.

“If you don’t learn History, then you are destined to repeat it.” I went on to tell Molly that, the good will use history to stop the bad, and the bad will use history to enslave the good. I told her that no matter how “enlightened” people claim to be, Romans 3:12 tells is that “All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.””

Ecclesiastes 1:9 tells us, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” This means that one of the greatest signs that we have is our own history, and the most stupid thing a person can say is, “oh, that will never happen again.” History reveals the only constant thing that man is, and that is that man is unstable and evil without God’s direction.

James 1:5-9 –  If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

It is time for people to heed the signs that history is yelling to us.

I looked at Yahoo news today and there were 2 articles that stood out to me. One was about North Korea and the other was about our own government. Immediately my thoughts went back to World War 2. We had Nazi Germany on one side and Japan on the other.

Hitler had duped the German citizens (through propaganda media), into accepting the totalitarian rule of the Third Reich, by promising prosperity to them. The citizens referred to Hitler as their “savior”, and submitted themselves to the National Socialist German Workers Party. When prosperity didn’t come (it never does under Socialism), the Jews were used as the scapegoats, and were blamed for all the impurities in the nation. The citizens of Germany pursued wealth and pleasure, while using morality to persecute others.

On the other side of the world, Japan was wanting to dominate East Asia, and were looking at America with disgust. American culture was also deemed to be moraly corrupt, and needed to be done  away with. Our “Intelligence” and intercepted messages warned of an attack by Japan, but no one wanted to be held responsible. We were in a place as a nation where the right hand didn’t know what the left was doing, and on Sunday December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Empire of Japan.

On our own soil, America had just experienced 2 opposing decades. the 1920’s or the “Roaring Twenties”, and the 1930’s or the “Great Depression”. The 20’s was a time of cultural change and a break with traditional values, wealth and pleasure were on the rise, and governments were considered to be in a “normal running state”. When it came time to pay the piper for the party, the 30’s ushered in a time of hardship.

The world had wealth, and didn’t need God. We were prosperous, had time to consider new ideas and ideals, and frankly the idea of “God,” was cramping our style. The price for not considering God, or thanking Him, is always our own destruction. History always tells us that moral Godly decline, is always the precursor to a fallen nation.

So here I sit, looking at our nation and the world in general. I see the Koreans and Muslims looking at us with disgust, and I see people put faith in Obama. I see our freedoms being stripped away, as we are promised safety and wealth. I see American citizens being conquered from within, by an evil government claiming to have our best interests at heart, while hoarding everything to themselves.

I see a lazy, fat and unconcerned Americanized Christian Church with more concern for their 501C3s, than they do for getting the truth of the Gospel out to the lost. I see the church bickering over personal preferences, while forsaking the Word of God, allowing Satan to infiltrate the church to the point that there is no difference from us and the world. I see us arguing doctrine, while Jesus nor The Word of God, is anywhere in sight.

When I see America, I see Nazi Germany… I see Godless Communists… I see Sodom and Gomorrah… I see a nation that is on it’s death bed. I see a nation that can only blame itself, if it doesn’t cry out to God to heal it.

My heart breaks, because I see where we are headed. History reminds me of Stalin, Hitler, Fidel Castro, and Hugo Chávez. History reminds me on the ups and downs that the Israelites took when they asked for a king’s rule instead of God’s. History reminds me of the mistakes of the Christian Church (both Catholic and Protestant). History reminds me of all the times that people have taken their eyes off of the Almighty God, to peruse pleasuers of the flesh.

Several years back, I noticed something about the word “history”. It can be pronounced “His Story”.

God has a way, and it is better. Any plan that did not originate with God will fail. Every plan that comes from God, has no room for the input of man. God’s plans must be followed to the letter, if you are going to succeed. God’s plans include everything that He is. That includes salvation, healing, direction, protection, peace, joy, forgiveness, unity, position, prosperity and everything that is good.

You can, of course write your own history, but you will fail. Your own imperfections, will foil the most perfect plan that you could ever devise for yourself. Your most perfect plan, will look like rust heap, compared to the plans that God has for you.

You have a choice then, stay the course and repeat man’s history over and over again, or accept God’s plan. Accept Jesus, know who God is and be thankful for who He is, walk in His plan for you, and allow your history to become His Story.
