“Pastor Needs A Spittoon”

Can I say it? I love my church!

We are a very casual church at AGO, and that is primarily because I am not a suit wearing kind of pastor. You will not find me preaching with a tie (or even clean shoes). I often tell my congregation to be ready, because one day I will show up in my Cover-Alls.

I would rather we have clean spirits, and not be afraid to get ourselves dirty as we step out of the 4 walls of our church. Our world is filled with hurting people who are looking for a honest to goodness “Jesus” out there and we make it impossible for them to see Him through our “Bankers Clothes”. I am not saying that it is wrong to dress nice for church, but I am saying that we need to make sure Jesus looks good also, and He looks better when by our actions we make Him look good.

This Sunday, I was greeted by a member with a happy excited voice. Mrs. Cleo is the sweetest little lady, and she couldn’t get her words out fast enough as she told me, “if your gonna wear those coveralls, then your gonna need this…”

A Spittoon!!! My first gift as a pastor to show appreciation, and it is the best ever. Noooo… I do not chew toe-backy.

I also was given, by one of my past pastors a beer stein, and I have never drank alcohol in my life. That also sits proudly on my shelf as well.

But, anyway. As I lifted up my spittoon, I found myself overwhelmed at my gift. The genuine nature of how it was given, far outweighed the past life this little spittoon had.

In my hands, no one will ever spit into it again. I cleaned it, and it is now in my protection. This little brass vessel might look like a spittoon, but it isn’t one anymore.

Isn’t that how we are to God?

We go to Him as sinners.

We are vessels that hold the vices of this world, before we are taken in, cleaned, and protected by Jesus.

He looks at us not by what we used to be, but by what He says we now are.

Take the time today to allow Jesus to clean you out, and make you a new person.
