What Is Normal

Recently I was reminded of a time when I was expected to make things “normal” for people. Statements like “why can’t you be a normal…” and “I just want to be in a normal…” would bombard me.
I see attitudes of some people who expect others to make them feel secure, loved or respected. Women wait for their Knight in Shining Armor and men are looking for Donna Reed so that they can have a “normal” and healthy relationship.
I learned that “normal” is what I make of it. Life is full of ups and downs, and most of the time we are in an “out of control” state of being. Normal is the willingness to be content with what you have been given, and striving to be the best that you can be.
Sometimes we can change things, sometimes we can’t. Knowing the difference can either give us hope or major frustration.
There is only one person that I truly trust, and that is Jesus. Everyone else, despite their best intentions, will let me down. It’s nothing personal either way, it is just knowing that all of us will mess up.
We can have the best intentions, and still say and do the wrong things. We desire to comfort, but how can we know what to do when the person we want to comfort doesn’t even know what they want? “Hurting people hurt people” is in our nature.
When I hurt the most, when all have let me down, when I am even unsure of what I want for comfort, Jesus has been there for me.
When situations have seemed to be out of control and fear tries to set in, I give it over to Jesus. It may seem cliche’ to some, and strange to others, but it is still the truth. The Almighty All-Knowing Ever Faithful Lord God knows what you need when “normal” seems to be a pipe dream.
Looking to others, who are just as out of control as you, is foolish and silly when you think about it. Like I said, it is nothing personal, but the blind can’t lead the blind and two drowning people can’t both be life guards.
You want things to be normal? Stop looking for the smooth roads and rounded edges because they are not the norm. Look instead to the One who can get you through the craziness.
Because normal isn’t in the path, but normal is in the journey.
