Patience of The Saints

This morning Mary was telling me about a friend and a familiar phrase came to my mind and elements of the Book of Job were highlighted.

I have many friends who are going through very difficult times right now, and we all share similar stories. Allow me to set the scene as to where they are…

They all had areas in their lives where once they felt strong and blessed, but for some reason they have lost that. They have been separated from other people as if by force, and often wonder if God is even listening. They are having to stand, seemingly alone and in the dark, holding on to those things that once proved to be true, but now not so easily obtained.

In my own instance with this physical attack. I was a fairly strong guy and I relied to my strength. I remember being able to lift the backend of a friend’s Honda Accord off the ground. I was a fairly healthy guy, and even though covered in a pretty layer of blubber, I could still jog 2 miles if I had the inkling to do so. I also stood on faith quite often, and remember a time when I fell off the deck and know I cracked my leg bone. I said, “Lord, if I was on the mission field, I would not be able to get it set, so I call my bone set and whole.” I got up, and walked as if nothing happened.

I have friends who have had similar things happen, but in different areas. Their strengths have been reduced, and areas of their lives where they never had to consider needing help, were taken from them. One might have always had jobs and wealth, but now those things elude them. Another might have had a healthy family environment, but now their whole family is under attack. Other people might have had a strong spiritual group of friends, but now sit alone and wonder if anyone cares. The list is long, but you get the idea.

So here we are sitting, the strengths we once relied on have been stripped from us. But we know we are not alone, because “God is faithful” and “He will never leave nor forsake us.” We are in a place where the only thing we have to rely on is The Lord, and the fact that His Word is truth and unchanging.

I often refer to this time as “my Job-esque experience” All that was once wealth in my life has been robbed from me, close “family” is basically telling me to “curse God and die” as they question my faith that God has got this, and “friends” look at me as if to say “What did you do to make The Lord so mad at you?”

I know I did nothing wrong to be attacked. Like Paul before he got the thorn in the flesh, I was getting many dreams and insight from The Holy Spirit before this happened. I often question The Lord as to why He would give me direction and desires, only to allow me to get slammed to the dirt as I was ready to move out.

I remember praying through the worst pain I have ever experienced, and it was as if I heard Satan laughing at me. Taunting me, saying that I needed to stop wasting my time because God quit listening to me long ago. Scripture told me otherwise though, and I continued on.

If what I have described to you sounds very familiar, please read on.

So this morning, as Mary was talking to me, a familiar phrase was highlighted to me. “Patience of the saints.”

Twice (with the mouth of two to three witnesses let something be established) is this phrase mentioned in The Book of Revelation. The first time is Revelation 13:10 and it is referring to the time when the beast will be allowed by God to blaspheme for a span of 42 months. The second time is in Revelation 14:12 and it is concerning the refusal of “The Mark of The Beast”.

These two instances show that the saints (christians, believers, born again folks) will face instances in their lives where there will be trials and tribulations and false opportunities to accept Satan’s “assistance” in the form of the spirit of the mark of the beast. I am not referring to pre, post, mid, already happened… I am referring to spiritual concepts here. If End Times events are ringing true as well, then good because we are there.

You see, there have been times when God has allowed blinders to be places on people, until things were meant to be revealed in His Word. There have been times when Satan has been allowed to move in people’s lives in the past. Revelation 13 mentions areas where Satan is allowed to move.

Revelation 13:5-10

And he was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

It sometimes has nothing with what you might have done, but like John 9:1-7 when asked about who sinned that a man was born blind, Jesus answered in essence “no one sinned, but that God might get the glory, I will heal him.”

When Job demanded an audience with God for the attacks on his life, God gave him one. The Lord asked Job a series of questions. Questions like, “where you there at the beginning?” “Do you have a clue about how the universe works?” God even asks him about massive deep sea creatures…

With all of our self perceived scientific knowledge about the universe, we must admit that we are wearing blinders and are still basically clueless. We can cry out for justice, but do we want that same justice to come looking for us one day?

What does God offer us. When I first prayed about this attack, and asked about obtaining medical help, The Lord just said, “Allow me to just walk through this with you.” Now that I see it, it was the same thing that He offered Job…

“Trust Me, and allow me to orchestrate a solution for you and let’s get through this together” Sometimes He will ask us to move, other times He needs us to just “sit down and be quiet.”

There are so many variables to consider in this existence, and we don’t have enough information to work out a solution. But The Lord does, and we need to allow Him to work on our behalf.

Having those things, that we once considered strengths removed, just might be the blessing we need to place complete 100% trust in The Almighty, so that we stay out of the way so that He can move the mountain we need moved.

Matthew 17:20, Matthew 21:21, Mark 11:23 require that we speak to the mountain to be removed. Have you ever removed a mountain? Do you have the information about the mountain for it to safely be moved? Do you have a place to place the rubble? Would you risk flooding the earth by throwing all that rubble into the ocean causing tsunamis to tear through the planet?

With all of our personal understanding, knowledge and strength we still don’t have a clue. We can’t place our faith in what we or other people know, but we can trust The Lord enough to know that His Words are true. If we would trust Him, he will deal with the “unknowns” and He will walk with us through to the end.

We don’t need to know why or how, we just need to know that He is faithful, unchanging, loving and on our side. Satan is a liar, and his tactics are really no different from person to person.

Yeah Satan might have this season to blaspheme, but we have the knowledge of an eternity with The Almighty. Yeah none of this makes sense, but does it really have too, before we are willing to trust God 100%? Yeah it hurts and the pain is real, but we must still be patient until the end.

I have decided to cause this low time in my life, to be one that causes The Lord to receive all the glory and honor. Not by wallowing in it and allowing it to kill me, but by overcoming it and proving that The Word of God is true and good.

I pray all the time, for a way to be able to live a life that gives God glory for the suffering Jesus went through for me. So like He defeated sin, death, hell and the grave by fighting until the end for the promises of God, I can do the same by standing one the promises that His actions afforded me.

Romans 5:1-5

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
