The Compromising Church

As these End Times seem to be quickly upon us, I feel compelled to look at The Seven Letters to The Seven Churches as written in the Book of Revelation.

The point of this, is strictly for personal evaluation, but I may reflect on the actions and reactions of others to keep me focused.

The letters, were written not as a way to point out the wrongs of others, but for the believer (those who call themselves christians) to make sure their lives are on the up and up when it comes to their walk with Jesus.

The third letter is to what God refers to as “The Compromising Church…”

Revelation 2:12-17

12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write, ‘These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword: 13 “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. 15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth. 17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.”’

The first letter went to a church that was faithful to God’s Word, but forgot to include their first love, Jesus. They started to rely on their own ability, instead of God’s provision. The second letter was to a persecuted church that was getting ready to fall on tougher times. Not because of what they had done, but because Satan had zeroed in on them. God wanted them to remember that this was a temporary test, and to stay focused.

It seems that the church of Pergamos was located in one cesspool of a city; the modern day equivalent of Sodom. God knew that, and even recognized that some of them were killed for the faith.

But it seems that they tried to cultivate this “why can’t we all get along” philosophy. It would be the “let’s try to be more cool and relevant” thought of today.

I see this in our churches all over today. Rather than take a stand for the completeness of God’s Word and be called hateful and lame, they tried to fend off persecution by watering down the Word to make it more palatable.

You see it is ok to portray God’s Word at relevant today (because in truth, God’s Word is forever relevant and unchanging), but it not ok to change it so as to not offend anyone. God’s Word is God’s Medicine for people, it brings truth and healing to a dying world. And we all want to quote the great prophet Mary Poppins that said, “a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down,” but you can’t dilute medicine with sugar to the point that the medicine has no effect.

God’s Word is perfection, and the slightest lie makes it ineffective. It is meant to be administered straight for maximum effect, and the sugar (for a great lack of a better word) is supposed be in the form of the Great Physician’s Assistant (the believer) having a loving bedside manner.

Embracing the watered down overly diluted God’s Word mentality is an open door to compromise. Think about the origin of the word compromise starting with the root word “com” which means together and the word “promise” which is an agreement to do a specific thing.  The word “compromise” basiclly means that two conflicting views come together and make an agreement.

When a person rejects the lies of sin and come in repentance to God’s perfect truth, they are compromising their old ways and agreeing to follow God’s perfect way. When two people compromise to each other and agree to live a certain way, God’s is totally out of the picture because “two lies will never make a truth.”

That is why this country is falling and under judgement. We used to base our laws on the truth of God’s Word. This was to the point that lawyers had to also be Bible Scholars, because the attitude was maintained that “how could you rightly divide man’s laws, if you couldn’t first rightly divide God’s Laws.”

The same is true for a church assembly. When we try to compromise our faith (belief that what God’s Word says is true to the point that we speak it and live it out) with the beliefs of the unbeliever, we totally kick out God in the process. And instead of a spiritual church body, you have a carnal church body and all the issues that go with it.

1 Corinthians 3:1-6 tells us, “And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.”

Instead of compromising God’s Word to make it palatable, start preaching the milk (foundational core beliefs) of the Word. I personally still maintain that every christian should be able to tell an unbeliever the foundations of salvation while giving their personal testimony in under 30 seconds. But the church is so full of  compromise, that the teachings of the Nicolatians is still alive today.

There is no real change happening in the lives of those who call themselves “christians.” Everyone seems to know about Jesus, but there is no relationship. I always hear people try to tell about Jesus, and all I see that they think He is is some kind of Psychedelic Hippy Freak who is made in their own image instead of them being remade in His image.

That is what compromising to the world does, it causes you to forget who Jesus is. It hinders people from having access to the true saving gospel, and from being set free from sin. Watering down the Word of God, prevents people from that personal relationship with God.

Have you wondered why Jesus took out a whip and opened a can in the temple? It is because those responsible for offering the sacrifice for people’s sins, were more concerned with making a buck selling the sacrifice animals than with people being able to come to God and getting to know Who He is.

And today in the church we have the same thing… I see these stupid articles stating reasons that people are leaving the church, and how we need to compromise the faith to keep them in. If people leave the church, it is because they have an issue with Jesus. Jesus even said that if the world hates and rejects you, it is because they hated and rejected Him first. The devil will give them many reasons to justify rejecting Christ, but we must still maintain the truth of God’s Word.

Remember as per verse 6 God is still saying, “Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.”

Think about the lie Satan is telling the church. He says, “if you fall you are a hypocrite.” When you accept that lie, he then says, “let’s stop preaching sin, so that you won’t be a hypocrite.” He then tells the unsaved, “there is no more sin, so you don’t need a savior.” And then the next lie comes into play, “Since we don’t sin, we are all little jesus clones (note I left the word jesus with a small j?), and we all know who he was.” Here is the plan of salvation from the anti-christ…

God says to call out sin by preaching His perfect Word. He tells us that when we fall, we are to repent and allow His perfect grace and mercy restore us (keep on preaching.) He wants us to keep on preaching and repenting as the Holy Spirit leads us, so that the world will see His grace and salvation and realize that they need a savior too. By seeking the truth, living the truth, receiving God’s Grace and mercy, we can know who Jesus is (instead of who He was.) Here is God’s plan of salvation through His Christ (the chosen one Jesus who is the only way.)

Lord Jesus, help me to never compromise You, for you are God’s Word made flesh. Help me to walk in Your Way, embrace Your Truth, live Your Life and speak Your Words that point people to back You.
